The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advertisement produced using Artificial Intelligence following facing widespread online backlash.

The short ad was developed via generative AI clips and was first uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Viewer Criticism and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, commenters lambasted the use of AI in the commercial. Several described it as "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment serves as an key lesson as we explore the effective application of Artificial Intelligence," stated a statement from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various scenarios that often go badly during the festive season, under the theme "the most terrible time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI Commercials

Adverts that feature AI tools have emerged as a increasing trend among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Because videos made with current AI video tools are prone to distort the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also sparked concerns about the replacement of human roles in the creative sector, with some observers stating it could affect opportunities for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

Following the video's removal, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

Bridge claimed, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then edited afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This was not an experiment," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the sentiment for other AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, other businesses have also encountered scrutiny for using AI in advertising. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the evolving discussion within the advertising and production industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and creative integrity.
